Warning! This post is full of Death Note spoilers!
Is Kira evil or not? This is one of those questions I just can’t find a straight answer for. I absolutely can’t answer to it with just either yes or no.
At the very beginning, Yagami Light was introduced to us as an intelligent person who was bored with his life. When he found the Death Note, he felt like he had found a purpose to his life. He wanted to purify the world from evil. He wanted to be justice.
By killing off criminals, his goal was to create a new world populated by honest and kind people. He wanted to become the god of the new world. By using the Death Note, he wanted to make the world a better place.
“Someone has to do something! At the time I obtained the notebook, I realized I had to do it! No… Only I could do it!! I knew that killing people was a crime… but there was no other way to correct things! That was the purpose given to me! Only I could do it… Who else could have done it?! To come this far?? To be able to go on?! That’s right… to create a new world… only I could do it.” - Yagami Light
He knew it was wrong to use the Death Note, but he didn’t know any other way. He had to hide the truth that he was Kira to not get caught, to continue on. He sacrificed so much to be what he believed was his purpose. But in the end, all he was in the eyes of those who tried to catch him was a mass murderer.
“No… You are just a murderer. And this notebook is the deadliest weapon in the history of mankind. You lost yourself to the Shinigami and to power of the notebook. And you’re mistaken, to think of becoming God; A crazy mass murderer. That’s all there is. Nothing more.” - Near
Indeed he was a mass murderer. He could basically kill anyone he just wanted. His idea was to kill criminals, people that were evil. But those who tried to catch him… were they evil? Weren’t they just innocent people who just had different ideals than he did? Was it also part of the plan that every single person had to think his ideals were right?
Was it right that he was that one person who were given the power to rule over the world? Wasn’t it unfair?
“In the 6 years Kira has existed, wars have ceased, violent criminals have almost died out…” - Yagami Light
As more and more criminals died, the world maybe really became a safer place… but those who were allowed to live in it, they lived in fear that one day their life would be taken from them. They had to constantly be aware of what they were doing to not do something that would be against Kira’s ideals.
Was it fair? No. With the power of the Death Note, Yagami Light became a mass murderer who became obsessed with his powers and wanted to be a god. He wanted to rule everything. He wanted to kill of the evil, but wasn’t he one too?
But no matter how much I think about it, I cannot decide whether he is evil or not. In a way he is, but in a way he is not… He didn’t do all this to be evil. You can see how obsessed he became of his powers, but still he was a good person from the inside and did everything with good intentions. Yagami Light, Kira… your story just makes me want to cry. No matter how much he tried… he still failed.
